These are some of the major characteristics of autism:
- Lack of eye contact
- Unusual and obsessive attachment to objects/activities of own choice
- Excessive interest in patterns/textures
- Severe difficulty with expressive language ability and communication skills
- Overactive and repetitive movement and behaviour
- Extreme difficulty adapting to social group situations
- Severe and uneven learning impairment
- May display indifference
- No fear/anticipation of real danger
- Resistance to change
- Inappropriate laughter or giggling
- Difficulty with motor co-ordination and planning
- Impairment of sensory systems
- Extreme anxiety
- Difficulty adapting to any sort of change (in routine or environment)
